How It Works

Cosmetic lasers have quickly become an indispensable tool in the health and beauty industry, thanks to being noninvasive, almost painless treatments with results lasting a year or longer. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser treatment can be used to erase pigmented scars, tattoos and moles with lasting results; this course teaches this technology for cosmetic treatments as well as hair removal.

This course is intended to prepare you to offer IPL treatments in your aesthetics clinic.

Multiple governing entities regulate the ownership, management and facility requirements for laser hair removal clinics. Only qualified professionals may own such clinics, purchase and use devices, as well as provide hair removal services.

California has some of the strictest regulations in the nation when it comes to who may operate an aesthetic laser, due to the associated safety risks. According to your state’s rules and regulations, depending on where you reside you may need a cosmetology or medical board license in order to practice cosmetic laser treatment. This is particularly relevant if providing laser hair removal services in a physician’s office.

California has some of the toughest licensing requirements in the nation. California’s Medical Board regulates hair removal laser devices; anyone operating one must first be certified as either a nurse or physician assistant (Medical Board of California 2016).

Additionally, NP/PAs must attend an approved Laser Safety Training program and maintain a list of patients treated by them. Furthermore, they must always remain under direct supervision from either a board-certified collaborating/supervising physician or approved supervising nurse practitioner at all times. Similar rules apply for non-hospital healthcare facilities like medi-spas, salons and dental or veterinarian offices which must designate an LSSC to oversee all laser activities and make sure users abide by them.
